No pawn stands on d4, e4, d5 or e5 - this line is played with the centre squares empty.
The first 3 moves, explained
- 1. g4 Opens the f1-h3 diagonal for the bishop. Theory calls this the Grob Opening.
- 1... g5 Opens the f8-h6 diagonal for the bishop. Theory calls this the Double Grob.
- 2. f4 Challenges the pawn on g5 - it can take on f4. The pawn is genuinely on offer - this is the Coca-Cola Gambit: development and initiative over material.
