1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 Nxd4
The structure hands White the half-open d-file - rook pressure down it is a standing plan. Black comes out ahead on material - White needs concrete play to justify it. d4 at move three trades the centre open immediately: development races and piece activity replace slow manoeuvring.
