- 1... d6 Supports the centre, adding control of e5.
- 2. Nf3 Develops the knight to f3, eyeing d4 and e5. It also props up the d4 pawn.
- 2... Bg4 Develops the bishop with tempo - it attacks the knight on f3. Theory calls this the Wade Defense.
